In a millivolt pilot system, a small rod sits in the pilot flame and generates the voltage that holds the gas valve open. The Enviro Thermocouple EC-008 (Enviro Part Number EC-008) replaces this rod on Enviro gas fireplaces, gas stoves and gas inserts built before October 2000.
The thermocouple senses pilot heat and sends a signal to the gas valve confirming the pilot is lit. Without a working signal, the valve cuts gas flow to the burner as a safety measure.
A thermocouple that has weakened with age can let the pilot drop out even when the flame looks normal, which the gas valve reads as a safety cutout. If pilot outages are frequent, check the thermocouple's position in the pilot flame before assuming the part has failed. Installation and adjustment should be performed by a licensed gas technician in accordance with local codes.
If you are replacing this thermocouple, it is worth inspecting the pilot assembly and gas valve connection at the same time, since wear in one component often shows up as symptoms in another.
