A worn or cracked door gasket can allow combustion gases to leak past the seal, so inspect the gasket for hardening, gaps, or fraying whenever the glass is removed. Retaining screws can seize over time; a penetrating oil and a properly sized screwdriver reduce the risk of chipping the glass during removal.

While the door is open, check the surrounding door gasket and any adjacent rope seals for wear, since they age at a similar rate and are easiest to replace together.
